Tips for studying course materials

Study for 5-30 minutes a day. Even learning just one page can significantly advance your knowledge and boost your motivation to learn more.

Tips for studying course materials

1. Study one page at a time

  • Study the materials one page at a time. Focusing on one page at a time keeps motivation high because the section is manageable.
  • You can also divide a single page into 2 or more parts and study one part at a time.

2. Form sentences from words

  • Create 3-5 word sentences from all the words in the material and say them out loud if possible. This is a very effective way to learn Finnish. When you create and say a sentence out loud, new words stick in your memory faster and your pronunciation improves.

3. Study out loud

  • Repeat the words and sentences from the material out loud. This speeds up memorization and improves your pronunciation.

4. Listen and Repeat

  • Take advantage of the listening features in interactive sections. Listen to how words and sentences are pronounced and repeat them.

5. Practice Writing

  • Use the writing features in the interactive sections. This activates your memory and helps you remember new things.

6. Print the Materials

  • Some people find printed versions of materials more effective. Download the PDF files, print them, and keep them, for example, on your living room table. This way, you'll be more likely to pick them up.

Enhance your learning by speaking aloud

Speaking aloud is one of the most effective ways to enhance your Finnish learning. During your study sessions, make it a habit to talk to yourself about various topics. This way, you'll use the words you've learned from the materials and activate your memory.

Even 5 minutes a day can significantly speed up your learning. Come up with a topic for each day, such as:

  • Talk about what you did during the day.
  • Discuss your plans for the rest of the week.
  • Talk about your dreams, family, the weather, your job, your home—anything.

When you use the language spontaneously, you'll need to retrieve words from your memory and think about sentence structures. Your pronunciation will improve, and active language use is key to proficiency. During your speech, you can check the words you need using Google Translate, which helps you learn new words simultaneously.

Speaking aloud may feel awkward at first, but it will become easier after a few times.
